Context

ADIF (Administrator of Railway Infrastructures) is the entity responsible for the railway infrastructure network in Spain. Its role is essential in ensuring the proper functioning of railway transportation, facilitating the operation of various companies in the sector, such as Renfe and other railway operators.

In recent years, ADIF has promoted a modernization strategy aimed at optimizing its network infrastructure, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing the liberalization of the railway sector in Spain.

Adif

Challenge

ADIF was facing several challenges that made the modernization of its communications infrastructure necessary.

Infrastructure scalability

Its national corporate network was based on technologies that limited flexibility and growth of services and users.

Improve operational efficiency

Network management and configuration required a modernization of platforms and services to reduce costs and operation times.

Segmentation and security

The existing infrastructure did not allow for efficient segmentation of services and users, which increased security risks and made management more difficult.

High demand for connectivity services

ADIF's corporate IP/MPLS network had to support both internal employees and railway operators, increasing the need for fast, reliable and secure connectivity.

Solution

To address these challenges, ADIF, in collaboration with SATEC, carried out a modernization process in three main phases:

A new network infrastructure based on SDN (Software Defined Networking) solutions was implemented, enabling the automation of configuration and operation of communication services in the Data Centers.

Results

The modernization of ADIF's network has generated key benefits for its operations and for the railway sector overall:

1

Reduction of operational costs

The optimization of infrastructure and the use of SDN and SD-WAN technologies have significantly reduced network management and maintenance costs.

2

Increased operational efficiency

Process automation has reduced configuration and incident resolution times, improving service quality and user experience.

3

Improved security and segmentation

The implementation of SDN has enabled better access control and service segmentation, enhancing network protection and mitigating security risks.

4

Greater scalability and flexibility

The new infrastructure allows ADIF to grow according to it’s needs and adapts to future technological developments.

5

Facilitating the liberalization of the railway sector

By offering better connectivity services to railway operators, ADIF contributes to a more competitive and efficient railway market in Spain.
