Context
The VID-EXPERT project is developed in a global context where climate change represents one of the greatest challenges for various industries, including the wine sector. This sector, representing 1% of Spain's GDP, is particularly vulnerable to climate variations while playing a key role in combating climate change due to increasing consumer demand for more sustainable products. Aware of its environmental impact, the wine sector seeks to implement sustainable measures to reduce its carbon footprint.
The main objective of VID-EXPERT is to provide a smart digital tool that enables farmers and wineries to efficiently diagnose and mitigate their carbon footprint. This approach integrates both vineyard agricultural production and wine production in wineries, with the calculation of the carbon footprint as a crucial first step to achieving an advanced diagnostic system. This system uses CO2 emissions calculations as a basis for improvement recommendations, facilitating environmental sustainability and contributing to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in areas related to climate action, innovation, and responsible production.

Challenge
Before the implementation of VID-EXPERT, the wine sector faced several critical issues:
Lack of effective tools
Wineries and vineyards lacked precise and accessible tools to measure and manage their carbon footprint.
High costs
External services for carbon footprint management were costly, limiting many wineries' ability to implement effective measures.
Disconnect in certifications
The integration and application of sustainability certifications, such as the Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection (SWfCP), were neither efficient nor effective.
Need for integration
There was a lack of connection between agricultural and production practices, hindering a coherent and effective reduction of emissions.
Solution
SATEC, in collaboration with a consortium of expert institutions and companies, designed and implemented the VID-EXPERT digital tool. This solution not only enables the calculation of the carbon footprint at each stage of the winemaking process but also uses artificial intelligence to provide personalized diagnostics and mitigation recommendations.
The system collects the necessary data through a web application that presents specific forms for both vineyards and wineries. Responses are processed following a calculation model developed by the Operational Group experts. Additionally, in later stages, the system will integrate historical carbon footprint data and expert knowledge from users and scientists to refine a recommendation model that suggests best practices for reducing CO2 emissions.

The design, implementation, and configuration experience with the SATEC team was highly collaborative and tailored, enabling the solution to align properly with the project’s specific needs.
Results
To date, the main milestones achieved include:
Accurate measurement
Wineries and vineyards can now calculate their carbon footprint accurately and in detail.
Carbon footprint diagnosis
The carbon footprint measurement is analyzed and broken down by emission factors to identify the most significant sources of emissions and act on them.
Cost reduction
The tool has reduced dependence on expensive external services, generating savings for companies.
Improved sustainability
The ability to manage and reduce the carbon footprint has led to greater sustainability in the wine sector.
Certification facilitation
VID-EXPERT has facilitated the adoption and renewal of sustainability certifications, such as the SWfCP (Sustainable Wineries for Climate Protection) by the Spanish Wine Federation.
Informed decisions
The tool provides accurate data and personalized recommendations, enhancing managers' ability to make informed decisions about climate change mitigation.
Additionally, while the wine sector is advancing in its digitalization, it is recognized that this is a long and ongoing process. Large companies are further ahead, while smaller ones still require time to adapt.
